Humphrey Lyttelton, Ted Heath, Nat
Gonella
Looking back to the mid 20th century
it is difficult for us to appreciate how insular and ‘cut off’ from
American Jazz we were. Jazz was never shown on television and was
hardly ever featured on radio. Fans awaited the arrival of imported
albums at specialist record shops with near desperation – the Jazz
greats toured very occasionally, but, only to the big cities and
then very rarely due to M.U. restrictions. All of this opened the
way for British musicians to build up a large and loyal following.

music died’ in Don McLean’s American Pie was the day that the plane
carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed into
a snow covered Iowa hillside. Holly was just 23, his career spanned
just over two years yet he was a prolific songwriter and hit maker
who has influenced countless artists since.
