Looking back to the mid 20th century it is difficult for us to appreciate how insular and ‘cut off’ from American Jazz we were. Jazz was never shown on television and was hardly ever featured on radio. Fans awaited the arrival of imported albums at specialist record shops with near desperation – the Jazz greats toured very occasionally, but, only to the big cities and then very rarely due to M.U. restrictions. All of this opened the way for British musicians to build up a large and loyal following.

    Buddy Holly

3rd February,1959 a date immortalised as ‘the day the music died’ in Don McLean’s American Pie was the day that the plane carrying Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper crashed into a snow covered Iowa hillside. Holly was just 23, his career spanned just over two years yet he was a prolific songwriter and hit maker who has influenced countless artists since.
