Looking back to the mid 20th century
it is difficult for us to appreciate how insular and ‘cut off’ from
American Jazz we were. Jazz was never shown on television and was
hardly ever featured on radio. Fans awaited the arrival of imported
albums at specialist record shops with near desperation – the Jazz
greats toured very occasionally, but, only to the big cities and
then very rarely due to M.U. restrictions. All of this opened the
way for British musicians to build up a large and loyal following.
Humphrey Lyttelton – The Classic Years
features 26 standards including Georgia on my Mind, Wolverine Blues,
Panama Rag, Maple Leaf Rag performed by the man who became a British
institution following his hosting of the Radio 4 panel game I’m
Sorry I Haven’t a Clue.
Ted Heath
the most famous and successful big band leader in Great Britain of
the 40s, 50s and 60s, recording more than 100 albums and selling
over 20 million records.
Nat Gonella
the London born
trumpeter and bandleader who was a major influence on a whole host
of British jazzers. He played with Billy Cotton and Lew Stone before
forming his own band. The revival in trad
jazz in the late Fifties allowed him to reform his
Georgians. Our album features 25 of his best known tracks and an
informative booklet.
